I knew from the very beginning when I wrote down the synopsis for this story that I wanted to put in some references to Epicurus, my favourite ancient Greek philosopher.
And some of the Epicurean principles go so very well together with Hades, don't you think? I don't think Hades has heard of Epicurus, though (if Epicurus even exists at this point). It's just that some of his personal values happen to correspond pretty well with what will later be known as Epicureanism.

The purpose of Epicurus' philosophy was to attain the happy, tranquil life, characterized by peace, freedom from fear and absence of pain. For him, pleasure and pain were the measures of what was good and evil. He has been commonly misunderstood to advocate overindulgence, but that was certainly not the case. No pleasure was a bad thing in itself, but some of them could cause more suffering than they were worth and should be avoided.

"Of our desires some are natural and necessary, others are natural but not necessary; and others are neither natural nor necessary, but are due to groundless opinion."

Sex was according to Epicurus one of those natural, but not necessary desires. Hades is quite a rebel in his family for sharing that opinion (though it is of course always easy to say that sex doesn't matter when you're not having a partner anyway).
