Body Hair by A-gnosis Body Hair by A-gnosis
A quick drawing of Hades and Persephone that I made and put some ink into, after I learned that body hair wasn't exactly popular in ancient Greece (well, I guess I suspected that the whole time). It seems like a more or less hairless body was the ideal, which makes little Persephone quite a rebel at that point. However, Hades lives in a world of his own (uh, literally) so he doesn't even know that there are trends in this. :D

Many folks, past and present, have tried to start a 'pro-hair revolution' to normalize and legitimize feminine bodyhair - but i can't help but wonder: is that too antagonizing?  Is that an attempt to replace one body-expectation with another?  Perhaps if we just decide to let it be your choice to wear bodyhair or not, then the problem will be solved?:iconthinkingplz:

Of course the best thing would be if it was no big deal if you want to shave or not. But I'm not sure how we should get there. I mean, we are free to choose today if we want to wear bodyhair or not, but the media tells us that the beautiful body is a shaved body (especially if you're a woman, but I've got the impression that it's not so good for a man to be very hairy either). And when people question this norm, there is always the risk that they will just create a new norm and that people who prefer to shave will be the accused ones instead.

Actually, I'm composing a story about that.  It's set in the future; it's about a class of teenagers in a school where, as tends to happen, they're starting to internalize the social mores they've been told all their lives - one of those is {BODYHAIR IS NORMAL!  SHAVING IS SICK!}.  That sentiment is taken literally: anyone who shaves is considered diseased or inhuman.  It all culminates with a spate of suicides in the same frequency as the Hungarian suicide epidemic during the early '30s: suicide everyday in Budapest.  The people decide with so many dying for trivial reasons to except the pro-shave movement, to start letting folks shave if they want to and then never speak of it again.

This is a flipflop of our time concerning bodyhair.  The only thing I could think of to allow everyone to choose 'shave or no shave' was a suicide epidemic, though.  In the story, religious groups are up-at-arms and bellowing their hateful rhetoric, Lobbyist petitioning the state to ban shavers from the Senate (a la Ancient Rome) and from provincial governments as well as calling to rescind their citizenship!  Many municipal magistrates go so far as to require all citizens who attend the town-congresses to arrive nude, proving they're not shavers.  It's only once the suicides begin when people start to grow empathy for shavers; a few magistrates decide to call a 'meetings-for-understanding' where people sit down and talk about why they chose to shave.  Some refuse to give mercy, of course, but the general attitude adjusts to a tolerant one - one sign of improvement is there's no more anti-shave propaganda.

Ever since my soul gave me the insight, during a moment of meditation, that if I were forced to shave any part of my anatomy just because a have dick, i would not like that one bit! :( - I've meditated many times about the subject ever since.

(By the way, when I say 'soul' I refer to my subconscious-mind [or 'Deepmind' as I like to call it])

"I have hairy legs. And hairy armpits."
Me too. Hahaha, grows back too quickly and I hate the thought of shaving every day. That is so bad for your skin and I already have a few issues there.

Yeah, it's not good to do it too often and it takes some time too. And I kind of think it's cute with body hair, so I don't shave at all. ^^

I don't shave the hair on my stomach because I think it's cute. Don't like my armpits and my legs are a pain. My arms? I forget there is hair there. It's all about perspective and time.

Huh. My mum's from Macedonia, and she said they never shaved there but the Turkish women did. Funny how it changes from place to place. I only started shaving because where I live it's very hot, and it's awful in summertime. I cut most of my hair off for the same reason.

Yes, it's really interesting to see how beauty ideals change over time and from place to place. I can totally understand that in hotter areas people prefer to shave also for other reasons than appearance. It never gets that hot in Sweden, so my body hair never causes me any problems (besides that many people probably think I look disgusting).

Yeah, though I have a friend who doesn't shave (at least she didn't, maybe she does now) but for me it's just too much. I also tend to have thick hair. In winter I hardly bother shaving though. Sweden would be a perfect place not to shave ^_^

Bah, it's natural. I also don't get this fascination with shaving off/patterns into the pubic area

Persephone's Greek not French, why is she hairy?

In which way does she look French?
She is hairy simply because I personally think it's very cute and attractive with body hair (also, my version of Persephone doesn't want to put too much time on her appearance). :)

ah now i see. the french thing wasnt about appearance but that the citizens of france are know for excess body hair and infrequently bathing. at first i thought it was just a stereotype but i spent a couple weeks there and did a couple home stays. its all true terribly terribly true :(

Maybe it's an US stereotype about all Europeans. The hairyness. Maybe there is a little village in France where women still don't shave their legs. Germans have started to do it somewhen in the past thirty years or so, but maybe that was late compared to the US-Americans?

The stereotype about lack of hygiene sounds especially strange, as I think of the French as rather obsessed with their appearance. Well-dressed and so on. For all I know, that's a rather common stereotype.

IT IS YOUR DESTINY TO DRAW THOSE COMICS!

:)

har förresten inte fått tag på nån pc än men det kommer!

People sitting down can be tricky to draw. Sometimes I look at photos or old drawings after models to get the right pose, but this time it came out quite good anyway.
