I've known for a long time that there wouldn't be any love at first sight between Hades and Persephone. But the chances for them to meet and get to know each other better are so few, that some of it would have to happen through a secret correspondence. They met for the first time at the family party on Olympus, realized that they seemed to have a few things in common, and then Persephone didn't want him to disappear from her life completely (especially since Hades knows a thing or two about holding back fertility, something that she very much wants to learn) so she wrote him a letter. And now this correspondence has been going on for...two or three months, I think.

The problem with this was that a third person needed to be involved and carry their letters. Hermes seemed like the most logical choice since he has errands to the Underworld a little now and then, but, well, he isn't exactly the most reliable person around. Persephone must have made it very clear to him that she won't be nice to deal with if he should read the letters or tell anyone.

(In one of the earliest ideas to this story, Persephone wrote a letter to Hades already as a little girl since she wanted to know what happened to all the dead people. But I skipped that.)
