Shimmering-throned immortal Aphrodite,
Daughter of Zeus, Enchantress, I implore thee,
Spare me, O queen, this agony and anguish,

Sappho's "Hymn to Aphrodite", translated by Edwin Marion Cox, 1925. The poem is written as a prayer and incantation, and Christopher Faraone points out in Ancient Greek Love Magic that it has many similarities to ancient Greek erotic spells.
