Busy July

2 min read
I'm afraid that July is going be a month when I won't be so very productive with my comic, or so very active on here. On Friday I'm going away to my friend Patrik, to sketch the last on a comic book we're working on, and I won't come home again until July the 17th.

When I'm home again I must start preparing for an exhibition in Tallbo (the place that was once the home of the Swedish painter Ecke Hedberg) where I'm going to show some of my drawings and comic pages. I'm quite... nervous about that, to say the least. I don't really see my stuff as art, and though I know it's silly of me to think so, I don't feel like my comics and drawings deserve to be exhibited in art galleries and such places. Anyway, the opening of the exhibition is on July the 22nd.

And on July the 24th I'm going away again, this time to visit friends in Göteborg. So, yeah, not much time to draw on Anthesteria this month. I'm sorry about that and I hope that I'll be able to update the comic more regularly in August.

My 2016

2 min read
Best:

  • This year was a real ego boost for me as a comics creator. My book Ljusförgörerskan (Destroyer of Light) was one of the books nominated for "Best Swedish comic book 2015" by the Swedish Comics Association. I received a prize of 50 000 SEK from a cultural foundation in my town. And I was interviewed in the latest issue of Bild & Bubbla, the magazine of the Swedish Comics Association (that I also had the honor to make a cover for).
  • Me and my friend Joacim went to Greece twice (first in March and then in June) and I finally got to see places like Eleusis, Delphi and the Athenian Acropolis with my own eyes.
  • I've started to seek help for some of my autism-related problems at the habilitation services.

Worst:

  • My inspiration was very low between October and December, and I was totally stuck with the script for my next comic Anthesteria. This made me feel quite down, despite all the positive feedback that I got earlier.
  • Joacim moved to Gothenburg, so I don't see him so very often anymore (it takes between five to six hours to get there by train).
  • All the damn xenophobia that is spreading and that sometimes even showed up among my family and friends.

Happy new year, everyone! Let's make 2017 a good year.

So The Family Party is finished. Beside the triumph that I actually managed to tie this story together (never again a comic with so many characters in it!), I feel surprisingly indifferent about it. Maybe because my brain is already busy working on the plot for my next comic, Anthesteria. Or maybe because there are a few scenes in The Family Party that I'd like to edit a bit, so in reality it's not really finished yet. XD

  • The scene with Artemis' and Eileithyia's quarrel is escalating too quickly. It needs to be built up a bit more.
  • I don't quite like the flashbacks with Hades and Minthe. Except for the scene when Minthe flips in Hades' room and the Erinyes have to carry her out. I will definitely keep that one. Maybe I like it better because it is both tragic and comic, while the other scenes are just tragic. I don't know, I can't really put my finger on why the other scenes feel a bit off. Maybe the problem is that from these few glimpses we get to see, it's a bit hard to understand why Hades was involved with her in the first place? If anyone has any opinions on this, feel free to tell me.
  • I also feel like redrawing almost every panel with Aphrodite. Because it shows that I was not used to draw her. I should have practiced more before I drew her in the comic.

But besides that I think the comic is pretty good. I'm very pleased with the scenes with Athena. And Hades and Persephone. Since this was their first meeting I really wanted to get it right. They were not supposed to fall for each other instantly, but I didn't want them to dislike each other, either. Rather, they were supposed to think that the other was a bit weird but in an interesting way (and Persephone probably thought already then that Hades was quite attractive). And I think I actually succeeded with that.

I'm really looking forward to letting them meet again in Anthesteria, because then things will get a little hotter between them. But don't expect to see any comic pages anytime soon. The plot is still full of holes that I have to solve first. And I honestly need a little break now. ^^
